Wilshire Grand Center is a 1,100-foot (335.3 m) skyscraper in the Financial District of Downtown Los Angeles, California, occupying the entire city block between Wilshire Blvd. and 7th, Figueroa and Francisco streets. It is the tallest building in Los Angeles, the tallest building in California, the tallest building west of the Mississippi River and outside of New York City, Chicago, and Philadelphia, and the 11th tallest building in the United States.
The building is part of a mixed-use hotel, retail, observation decks, shopping mall, and office complex, expected to revitalize downtown Los Angeles and the area surrounding the building.

The skyscraper’s elevator system is a marvel of modern technology. It features destination-dispatch elevators that use artificial intelligence to optimize travel times and energy consumption. The system can transport passengers at speeds of up to 1,600 feet per minute, making it one of the fastest in North America.
STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING CHALLENGES
Constructing the Wilshire Grand Center presented unique engineering challenges. The building’s core-to-perimeter framing system utilizes a combination of steel and concrete, known as a composite structural system. This innovative approach allowed for column-free corners, maximizing usable floor space and offering unobstructed views of the Los Angeles cityscape.

The development of the Wilshire Grand Center led to significant changes in Los Angeles building regulations. It was the first skyscraper in the city permitted to forego a flat roof and helipad, traditionally required for fire safety. Instead, the building incorporates alternative safety measures, including enhanced elevator systems for firefighters and dedicated fire-resistant refuge floors.
